BEAUTY Q&A
Q. How can I make my hair look like it does when I leave the salon? I’d like some quick tips for rushed mornings. -Shari, Kirkland
A. Ask you stylist to show you what products and brushes he or she uses and pay attention to how it’s styled in the salon. Ask questions. It’s even ok to ask for a blow out lesson while your hair is being dried. Here are some tools you can take home: For volume, dry the hair upside down till almost dry, then clip up in sections and spritz a smoothing product such as Alterna Rapid Repair and use a large round brush to smooth the sections. Salon tip: Direct the air downward on the hair shaft and let cool before removing the brush. This lets the hair “set” so it comes out smooth.
Q. How can I keep my hair color from fading? -Susan, Bellevue
A. Ask your stylist to run your color through to the ends and finish with a clear “Glaze” to seal in color. Your hairs worst enemy is water and products with sulphates. They can fade newly colored hair. Well water can darken highlights and shampoos with sulphates strip the color. Try using Moroccan Oil shampoo for dry hair or Alterna Caviar Moisture shampoo for normal hair. These shampoos are formulated for color treated hair. Also, wear a hat if you are going to be in direct sunlight.
Q. If I use a clarifying shampoo will it make my hair shiny? -Anita, Woodinvlle
A. Clarifying shampoos are great if you want to get rid of chlorine, product build up or medication that is in your hair.
To boost shine, use a keratin based shampoo such as Brazilian Keratin or ask for a glaze at your next salon visit which will deposit a clear shine to your hair and last about 2 weeks.
Q. My hair gets frizzy in the damp weather. What can I do to tame the frizz? -Jennifer, Eastside
A. Your hair is absorbing the moisture which plumps it up creating frizz. Try using a smoothing conditioner and then apply an oil based product to your hair and distribute through with your hands, working down the hair shaft to smooth out the frizzies.
